REAL-TIME FLOOD RISK MONITORING IS AVAILABLE

The National Agency for Meteorology and Environmental Monitoring of Mongolia has commenced the installation of RQ-30 automatic water level and flow velocity measuring devices, manufactured in Austria, at 17 strategically selected locations along the Tuul, Terelj, Kherlen, Selbe, Delgermörön, Üür, Kharaa, Onon, Orkhon, Tui, Bogd, Ider, Selenge, and Khovd rivers. This initiative is being implemented with funding from the state budget.
These devices provide high-frequency measurements at five-minute intervals, which will significantly enhance water resource management, flood risk mitigation, and the preparation of technical and economic feasibility studies for major infrastructure projects. The RQ-30 equipment is specifically designed to withstand Mongolia’s extreme climate conditions, operating reliably within a temperature range of -40°C to +60°C.
Engineers specializing in surface water from the Hydrometeorological and Environmental Monitoring Centers in Ulaanbaatar and nine provinces (aimags) have received comprehensive training on the software and operation of the devices.
This marks the first time that automated, online-mode hydrological monitoring systems are being introduced in Mongolia’s surface water observation network, representing a significant advancement in the field of hydrometeorology and environmental analysis.
This development aligns with the goals of the United Nations’ “Early Warning for All” (EW4All) initiative, which urges all countries to prioritize citizen protection from natural disaster risks through timely and accurate early warning systems.
